Liturgy of the Word for Children (Sunday School)

Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
Ephesians 6:4

St. Martha's is a faith community with a variety of members.  Our children are part of that community.  Our goal is to make our children's experience of church meaningful and relevant in proportion to their age so that they develop as full and active members of the Catholic Church.

Sunday School is for children aged 4 to 7.  The children and Sunday School leaders are dismissed by the priest shortly after Mass starts.  In the meeting rooms downstairs, the children gather in groups according to their ages and do various activities such as coloring, being read a book, pray together, make collages, discussions, etc.  The lesson is prepared in advance and ready to use.  The leader needs to arrive about 10-15 minutes early to set out materials (i.e scissors, glue, crayons) and quickly go over the lesson plan provided.  After 30-40 minute lesson, the children are brought back upstairs to join their families and the rest of the faith community.

It is said that it takes a village to raise a child, it then stands to reason that it takes an entire faith community to mold a child's understanding of our Catholic values and principles.
Sunday School leaders are needed to commit to this role so that  our young can grow in their faith.
Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.
Proverbs 22:6

Children experience God in their own way.  Those who preside at children’s liturgies are able to touch the future of the young through prayer, the reading and discussion of the Gospel and its application to daily life.
Children Liturgy is for children in Grades 2 to 4.  It runs from September to May and is run during the first 20 minutes of Mass.  A Leader's Guide is provided.
If you want your child to join or feel you can share your talents by becoming a leader please contact the Parish Office at 403-381-8891.
