"Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked." Psalm 84:10
The ministry of ushering is the oldest lay ministry in the Catholic Church.
In the Old Testament ushers were called the "gatekeepers" and were considered so important that they were given living quarters at the Temple. Eventually they numbered in the hundreds and were the forerunners of today's ushers.
Nowadays, ushers are tasked with ensuring that those who enter our Church doors feel welcomed and that the faithful experience the love of Christ in their welcome.
The ministry of ushering is one of the most crucial because it is one of the most visible in the church.
Other responsibilities are:
greeting parishioners
directing parishioners to open seats
check to make sure gift bearing family is present or find a replacement
execute the taking of the collection
direct the congregation in communion
distribute bulletins
clean up pews after Mass
Anyone over the age of 14 is asked to consider volunteering for this ministry. Please phone the Parish Office at 403-381-8891.
